Residents of Akureyri in North Iceland woke up to snow covered mountains on Monday morning, reminding us winter is just around the corner. The temperature in town didn't dip below 5°C (41°F) with minimal precipitation, but conditions are usually very different higher up in the mountains. The mountains above Akureyri are no exception.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office had warned that temperatures might dip below freezing overnight in Northern and North Western Iceland. However, most towns and villages, which are situated along the coast, escaped these colder temperatures. A meteorologist who spoke to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV said that the snow which fell in some mountains in North Iceland might potentially survive for a few days, as the IMO is forecasting cold weather in the north tomorrow and rather mild weather for the next few days.

By Saturday, however, we will be treated to a small summer encore in North Iceland: Temperatures in the towns of Akureyri and Húsavík are expected to top 18°C (64°F), with clear skies and calm or gentle breeze: The description of a balmy, beautiful summer day in Iceland!

Forecast for the rest of the week:
Tuesday: Easterly or variable wind, gentle to fresh breeze with light rain in most parts of the country. Temperature 4 to 14°C (39-57°F), mildest in the southeast, but colder over night. ACTIVE (level 4) Aurora activity, but mostly cloudy, except parts of West, South and South-East Iceland.

Wednesday: Chilly with northerly fresh breeze to moderate gale, wind speeds 10-15 m/s (22-33 mph) and rain in the northeast, but elsewhere lighter and partly fair. Temperature 3 to 12°C (37-53°F), mildest in the south. HIGH (level 5) Aurora activity with clear skies over all but N.E. Iceland.

Thursday and Friday: Westerly wind and cloudy but mainly dry in the west of the country, but elsewhere fair weather. Temperature is expected to pick up.

Saturday and Sunday: Southerly wind and rain in the west of the country, but fair weather in the east. Temperature 10 to 18°C (50-64°F), warmest in the northeast and east.
