Violent storm peels road apart in East Iceland

By Staff

Yesterday's storm in East Iceland did not only blow buses off the road: The storm actually tore the road itself apart!

A local man, Sveinn Ingimarsson, took the following photo, showing how the storm had managed to peel large sections of the paving off the road near the town of Egilsstaðir in East Iceland.

Sveinn told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the road was torn apart sometime between three and four in the afternoon: "It was extremely windy when I was driving through, and the car was thrown from one side to the other by the wind as I tried to make my way along the road very slowly."

Yesterday ICE-SAR issued a travel warning for East Iceland. As the photo proves the warning was not without cause!
