A memorial walk and candlelight vigil was held in down town Reykjavík in memory of Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20 year old local girl who was murdered on Saturday January 14. Estimates of the crowd range from 10,000 to 12,000 people. Memorial services were also held in several other towns in Iceland, and in Copenhagen, Denmark.
10-12,000 people walked in the memory of Birna
People gathered began at Hlemmur square at 16:00 on Saturday, walking down Laugavegur street. The walk then stopped in front of house number 31 on Laugavegur street, where people left flowers and candles in memory of Birna. Birna, disappeared on Saturday January 14, was last seen in security cameras near the location where she is believed to have entered an automobile. Police believes she was then murdered in the car. Two men are in custody on suspicion of having perpetrated the crime.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that 10-12,000 people participated in the walk. Smaller memorial services were also held on Saturday in the towns of Akureyri in North Iceland, Reyðarfjörður in the east and Vestmannaeyjar island in the south. A candlelight vigil was also held in Copenhagen in front of the Icelandic Embassy.
