Today is the annual Icelandic Beer Day: The "Beer Ban" was lifted on this day in 1989

Every year on March 1 Icelanders celebrate the annual "Beer Day". The reason is that on this day in 1989 Icelanders were allowed to buy beer at bars and liquor stores for the first time in nearly three quarters of a century. Beer had been illegal since prohibition was introduced in 1915. In 1935, when prohibition was lifted, beer remained off-limits. Why beer was still illegal, while vine and strong alcohol was allowed, is still hard to understand!

But since 1989 Icelanders have quickly learned to both drink and make beer: Today the best sold beer brands in Iceland are all Icelandic, and Icelandic micro brewed beer has won awards and international praise. .

To celebrate Beer-Day many bars will have special happy hour deals. One of these is the downtown bar Kaldi, one of Iceland's top bars, which offers a Beer Day special until midnight:

"In celebration of Beer day (honoring the elimination of prohibition of beer) We at Kaldi Bar are going to have selected beers for 800 kr from 7 pm until midnight. Drop by Kaldi Bar and celebrate the anniversary of the Beer with us! "

Beer ice-cream
You can even get beer-ice-cream! The local brewery Viking teamed up with the ice-cream store Valdís (located by the old harbour, in the Grandi district) to produce three delicious new ice-cram flavors, one a Stout, another Organic Pils and finally an ice-cream flavored with the seasonal Easter brew from Víking.
