In recent years Iceland has served as the backdrop of several top movies and popular TV series. Fans of HBO's Game of Thrones recognize Iceland as the cold and terrifying land North of the Wall. And the fans of UK sci-fi drama Fortitude will recognize the fictional Spitsbergen town of Fortitude as the town of Reyðarfjörður in East Iceland. Now, however, the producers of Fortitude are exploring the possibility of moving the shooting of the third season of the series to Norway.

The manager of the Icelandic production company Pegasus, which has managed the shooting of Fortitude in Reyðarfjörður, told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the producers of Fortitude have applied for tax credits in Norway to move the shooting of the next season to Bergen in Norway.

A blow dealt by a stronger currency
The move would be a blow to the Icelandic movie industry and a significant blow to the town of Reyðarfjörður, which has benefited from the economic activity brought by the film crews. Fortitude is the most expensive TV show produced in the UK.

The primary reason the planned move is the strengthening of the Icelandic króna. The manager of Icelandic production company Truenorth, which has worked on numerous foreign films in Iceland, including Star Wars and Fast and Furious 8, told RÚV that due to the appreciation of the Icelandic currency Iceland was no longer competitive when it came to price. As a consequence fewer foreign movie and TV projects have been coming to Iceland in recent months.
