Ship captain spots two reindeer swimming in the sea near Höfn

Gunnar Ásgeirsson, a ship captain from Höfn in Hornafjörður, a fishing village located in Southeast Iceland, witnessed a rather unusual sight yesterday when returning to harbour; namely two reindeer swimming in the ocean.

According to the National Broadcasting Service’s report reindeer often spend time grazing in islands dotted around Hornafjörður fjord and will swim back to land when they have eaten their fill.

Although spotting sea-swimming reindeer is not a daily occurrence in Höfn, it is a fairly uncommon sight.  “They are good swimmers and easily swim across. They just go wherever they want to go,” Gunnar told RÚV.
