The Icelandic men's national football team secured a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia yesterday evening with a 2-0 victory over Kosovo. This is the first time Iceland has secured a spot at the World Cup, and the first time a team from a nation as small as Iceland advances to the world cup. The previous record was held by Trinidad and Tobago, with a population of 1.37 million. Iceland only has 334.000 inhabitants.

Sports bars in Reykjavík were packed with people watching the game, and despite rain and cold the two Fan Zones which had been erected in front of Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík, where the match was held, and at Ingólfstorg square in downtown, were full of excited fans. When it was clear Iceland had won the crowds went wild. The photos above give a taste of the atmosphere and excitement at the game and on Ingólfstorg.

And of course the fans and team did the famous "Viking War Cry" after the win. The following video of the famous "HÚH!" was shot and shared by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service:
