Due to severe weather and dangerously powerful winds in S.E. Iceland and the Eastfjords the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authorotity has closed a stretch of the Ring Road between the town of Höfn in S.E. Iceland and the town of Djúpivogur in the southern part of the Eastfjords. The Ring Road in Hamarsfjörður and Álftafjörður fjords has been closed to all traffic until further notice.

The sustained windspeed in the area has been 27 m/s (60 mph), with individual gusts reaching hurricane force of 45 m/s (100 mph). In addition to the danger these kinds of winds pose to cars, as powerful windgusts can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, the storm has been blowing rocks and gravel down the mountain sides onto and over the road.

The IRCA expects the road will be opened later today after the storm dies down.

Travellers are asked to study the weather forecast as well as updated weather alerts and road conditions carefully.
