A dramatic increase in the number of visitors has made it necessary to expand the Mývatn Nature Baths. Last year the baths, which are one of Iceland's two bleu water pools, were visited by 202,000 people. The year before the baths had been visited by 150,000 people. The growth this year is projected to be at least 10-15%.

The lagoon itself will not be expanded, only the visitor center and restaurant. Guðmundur Þór Birgisson, the CEO of the Nature Bath told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the goal is to be able to offer guests better service, for example by offering little less cramped changing rooms.

"We want guests to have a little more room. We are not necessarily thinking about increasing the number of changing rooms or cabinets, but to provide more space for each guest."

Last year the Blue Lagoon was similarly updated and expanded to accommodate a growing number of visitors. Nearly one million people visited the Blue Lagoon in 2016.
