More Reykjavík swimming pools to offer extended evening hours over the summer months

The City of Reykjavík has decided to extend the opening hours at two popular swimming pools this summer. Vesturbæjarlaug swimming pool, located just outside downtown Reykjavík, and the suburban Breiðholtslaug swimming pools will be open until 22:00 on the weekends. 

Currently all but one of the public pools in Reykjavík close at 18:00 on the weekends, 20:00 on Fridays but stay open until 22:00 on weekdays. The only pool to offer extended opening hours on weekends is Laugardalslaug, the largest public pool in Iceland. The extended weekend hours will come into effect on June 1 and remain in effect until September 4.

The city has also decided that the downtown swimming pool Sundhöllin will be open until 22:00 every night of the week, like Laugardalslaug. Sundhöllin is currently undergoing extensive renovation and expansion and will open to the public sometime this fall

The decision to extend the opening hours of the pools in questions came in response to a campaign launched by local residents. More than 3,000 swimming pool customers signed a petition to have the opening hours extended. According to the local news site Vísir the city made its decision public with a letter to the organizer of the petition, actor Ólafur Egill Egilsson, who published the announcement on Facebook. .

The map below shows the location of the swimming pools mentioned in the article. Note that all swimming pools in Reykjavík are open until 22:00 Mondays-Thursdays. Sundhöllin swimming pool will remain closed for renovation for the summer.
