Garún Icelandic Stout voted best beer at Hólar town Craft Beer Festival

By Matt Eliason

  • Garún Icelandic stout takes home 1st prize. With 11.5% alcohol by volume it's not for the faint hearted.

Hólar Town a small village in the Hjaltadalur valley, hosted its annual craft beer festival last weekend. Guests attending the event crowned Garún Icelandic Stout this year's festival winner.

After sampling a number of different craft beers from all over Iceland, the beer from Borg brugghús brewery took home the victory, followed closely by runner-up "Ship-o-hoj" from Ölvisholt brewery, and third place, Viking Einstök brewery for "Arctic-Berry- Ale."

The winner, Garún, is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland's most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)."

Garún is 11.5% alcohol by volume with a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee.
