The Metropolitan Police and Poice Special Forces were engaged in a high-speed car chase on the Ring Road between the Metropolitan Area and the town of Selfoss earlier this morning. Icelandic media and radio issued warnings to motorists to take caution as a number of Police vehicles was chasing an unidentified suspect.

We will update this story as it develops.

Police has yet to reveal the cause of the chase. The chase began at 9:56 am on Miklabraut, the main higway artery running west-east through Reykjavík. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop when signalled by police. Police immedately gave chase, soon joined by members of the Police Special Forces, the only members of Icelandic law enforcement who are armed.

The high-speed chase proceeded out of Reykjavík, along the Ring Road leading to South Iceland.

The chase came to an end shortly after 10:30 am when the suspect drove his car into Ölfusá river in the town of Selfoss in South Iceland. ICE-SAR Search and Rescue units, who were on-call, were immediately dispatched to rescue the man from the river. According to the local news site Vísir only one man was in the vehicle. A safety line has been thrown to the man, while rescue workers are preparing to get to him by boat.

The bridge over Ölfusá will remain closed for the next half hour while the Police investigates the scene.
