A motorist was caught on camera ignoring a roadblock at one end of Dettifossvegur road in Northeast Iceland. Roadblocks have been placed on the roads leading to the central highlands amid public safety concerns due to the ongoing events in Bárðarbunga volcano.

The video, which was published on the National Broadcasting Service’s website, was shot by a former employee, Steindór Gunnar Steindórsson, who at first thought the motorist had gotten the vehicle stuck off road. However, as the video shows, the motorist accelerates the car back onto the road and proceeds to drive off into the danger zone.

Steindór reported the incident to local police who managed to apprehend the disobedient motorist. The driver turned out to be of foreign nationality.

According to the National Broadcasting Service a considerable number of travellers are still in the area north of Vatnajökull glacier despite roadblocks and repeated warnings from the Icelandic Civil Defence and police for people to stay clear of the area.
